This trip covered five countries.
17 days Italy, Austria, Czech Republic
5 days Ireland
9 days UK.
Another Europe trip to the UK, Netherland, Germany, Switzerland and France (2009) are found here.
Checklist
- For those planning to cook, bring the following...packed foods notably curry powder (serbuk kari), powdered coconut milk(santan), soya sauce (kicap), chilli sauce, beef serunding (shredded beef cooked in spice) etc. which are not available in the european grocery. Note that UK custom may confiscate some food esp the perishable ones.
- Rice cooker.
- Power extension for 3 smart phones, laptop & camera.
- SD card for smart phone. 32G size is sufficient for photos & movies.
- Good walking shoes. Lots of walking when visiting the cities.
- Install translation software in your smartphones especially the ones which can scan and translate. Had installed Italian and German (for Austria n Czech)
- Portable weighing scale to check your bags for those planning to do lots of shopping. Airlines are strict with checkin luggage weight.
- Two biggest bag you can carry. Most flag carrier airlines like Malaysia Airlines only allowed 2 piece of check-in luggage. Do not bring more than 2 luggage pieces even though their combined weight are still within the 30 kilos allowed. Low cost carrier like Airasia does not have limit for the number of bag pieces. However, Easyjet only allowed one piece of luggage.
- Activate roaming for mobile phone. May need to do online transaction. Some banks will sent TAG number to registered mobile number.
- Power bank. You may happily taking photos and suddenly the smartphone battery runs low.
- USB adaptor for cigarette car charger
- Activate credit for for overseas use.
- Mentally & physically ready to drive on right side of the road.
- Navsat or gps. We brought our own set to save cost from renting with the car rental agency. Europe maps loaded may be outdated but served the purpose. Its free downloaded maps anyway, so no complaints.
- Pills supply for one month.
- Cash money in Euro and British pound
- Europe power adaptor. Italy uses 3 different plug type with different pins size. (C,F,L). First pic is the Malaysia plug like the ones in UK
The second pic is sample of the two plug types used, F and C. Both look the same except pin size for F (green) is bigger than C (white). So preferably bring adaptor type C since it can fit on all socket types ( C, F or L).
Type L has third pin for earthing.
Forget about all the technicalities. Just bring adaptor type C.
1. Route and road
Secondary road were used for scenic routes. For intercities travel ( eg between Florence and Venice), we use the highway/autostrada to save time. Highway roads in Italy are tolled roads. In Ireland, UK, Austria and Chech, highway are toll-free. The scenic route planned for in Italy were the Tuscany area around Siena, the Dolomite mountain north Italy and Amalfi Coast south Naples. So we covered the mountain, the vines and the sea.
2. Lodging and location
booking.com or airbnb.com were used for bnb and hotel reservations. Except for Venice, all site chosen are with kitchen facilities. We had reference staying with families of the visiting countries to understand their culture better. That was the main reason why we chooses airbnb website as the reservation means.
3. Park and ride parking - PnR
Parking are a problem for cities in our visiting list. Most parking were meant for 2 hours duration while others are exorbitantly high. Parking charges for these PnR are normally 3euro for whole day parking.
4. Rental Car
Request for a 1.5 cc manual car in Rome since we will be doing lots of driving especially in the hilly mountain area of north Italy and Austria. Also purchase full insurance coverage for peace of mind.

Couple of days before the departure, called the credit card company to ensure our cards are not blocked during the month long usage. Me & wife left Kuala Lumpur Internatinal Airport (KLIA) on Malaysia Airlines morning flight. Flight landed as scheduled at Heathrow after 13 hours. Upon arrival took National Expres
bus to Bristol to stay with our son doing graphics in University of
West of England. The bus was booked for the 7pm trip. The stop is just outside the arrival hall and
ticket had been pre purchased over the internet. We reached Bristol 9pm. The day was still bright and shining. We planned to stay for 3 nights
in Bristol before leaving for Rome on Monday afternoon.
On the Saturday we toured Bristol town. Bought a whole day ticket for 4 pound per person. Straight went to the historic 150 years old Clifton suspension Bridge.I had wanted to walk across the bridge ever since we saw it from distance during our previous visit to Bristol in 2011. Cars has to pay 1 pound to use the bridge. Pedestrians and cyclist are free. We return to the house for the afternoon prayers and continue walking the streets of Bristol and only get home 1130 pm. For lunch, we took kebab and mutton burger at one of the Turkish outlet.
Next day Sunday morning we left the house early for car boot sale at Clifton. Bought a whole day bus ticket since we were also planning to use the bus to get to the city center for the shopping malls. Bought some toys and souvenirs.

The flight to Rome was scheduled to land at Rome Fiumicino airport. However Easyjet from Bristol to Rome was routed to Campiano Airport due to fire weeks ago at the airport. We had to make our own arrangement to Fiumicino since we had rented the car at Fumicino. One option is to take the shuttle via Rome Termini station to Fiumicino which would take 2 hours.
The other option is to use the taxi to Fiumicino which is rather expensive. There is no direct shuttle between the two airport. So we had to take the local bus Gaspari which originate from east coast town to Fiumicino. The bus stop is just right in front Davinci monument outside the airport. The trip cost 10euro per person and takes 45 minutes.
We straight looked for Avis rental for the start of the driving trip. The documentation took about 20 minutes to complete. I had brought along international driving license which I had applied days before the trip. It cost me RM150 which is valid for one month. However the rental company did not even asked for the international license. It was good to have one as a precaution. Even when we were stopped by German border police and Italian police during their random check, the Malaysian driving license was good.
Car are left hand drive in Italy and the rest of Europe except UK and Ireland. Upon receipt of the car, I took a while to adjust as Malaysia cars are right hand drive. Moreover, gear shifting will be using the right hand which took me a couple of hours to adjust.
Italy highway or autostrada are paid road. Payment at the toll booth can either be made using credit cards or cash. For cash payment, both notes and coins are accepted. Change are refunded.
It is advisable to use manned toll booth if payment are using credit cards since unmanned toll booths may sometime do not accept credit cards even though there were displayed on the boards.
There are also booths that accept debit cards (touch n go in Malaysia) and debit cards with remote transmitter (smart tag in Malaysia). These cards are good for locals. Tourist may use this for long stay in Italy.
Using the federal road we drove to our first bnb at a camping ground in San Gimignano close to Siena. We made a stop at Aldi store to get our groceries where we got our stock of rice, drinking water, fish fillet, eggs, potatoes, strawberries, bread for our food ration. We arrived close to 3 am but had had called the campground earlier before their closing checkin time to get direction for the keys.
Woke up early next morning to start our tour of the Tuscany region. Drove along route SR2 southwards towards Siena and then using SR222 up north towards Florence The Mall factory outlet for some shopping. The wife got herself leather bags and purses. Went straight home as it was getting dark. We had booked the room with kitchen facilities for easy cooking. We prepared extra rice, fish curry and vegetable for dinner and also for the next stop in Venice since there were no kitchen provided in the hotel in Venice.
After two nights, we were ready to pack for our next destination in Venice. Checked out at 10 and stop over at a historic town of San Gimignano since it was only 5 minutes from the campground.
Spent almost hour and half taking photos of the old town.
On the way to Venice we stopped for some leather goods in Florence. We park the car at Co Op outlet at Viuzzo delle Case Nuove, 9/12 50143 Florence. Tram station Line T1 to Venice city center is just across the road. The tram took us right to the end station Alamanni. We bought the ticket from the ticket machine. It cost 1.5 euro per ticket. This ticket needs to be validated on the train. It can be used within 90 minutes on any public transport upon validation. It is important to validate the ticket since ticket inspector may board the train anytime for random checking. Another set of tickets were purchased on the return trip. Tickets can also be purchased at any newspaper/cigarette stall.
The wife bought some Italian made leather bags and purse along street of via Dell Ariento. Most of the shops were managed by Bangladeshi and they mostly can converse in Malaysian language. We prefer to buying goods from them since we can bargain better. Another made in Italy non branded leather outlet are stalls found along via di Capaccio. It was raining and we were only able to visit Piazza San Lorenzo, Duomo di Firenze and Ponte Vecchio bridge.

Also had to call campsite reception on where to collect the keys since we arrived very late. The room does not have kitchen facilities. However we had prepared food earlier in Siena campground. Had to use the rice cooker that we had brought along to heat up the food for dinner. We booked 2 nights here and no packing needs to be done so off to bed.
Wife prepared bread and half boiled eggs with kicap for breakfast. From the campground we walked 10 minutes to the bus stop for Venice. We purchased 2 sets of tickets for the going and returning bus from the hotel reception. As usual, upon boarding, tickets need to be validated by inserting into the yellow-colored machine on the bus.
The bus trip took 10 minutes to the last stop in Venice station. Walked the narrow streets and taking photos until San Marco Square. It was kind of leisure walk, sipping coffee, licking ice cream along the way. The wife was keen to try the gondola was put back due to the ticket cost of 80-100 euro for 45 min trip. We took the water ferries/bus from San Marco back to the bus station at Chiara jetty. Ticket per person cost 7 euro. Boarded the same bus No 5 that stops close to the campground.

For dinner, we use the rice cooker to warm the food from
yesterday dishes prepared in Siena campground. Left the campsite at 10 am. It was raining the next
morning all the way to Salzburg, Austria.
Before
reaching Austria border, we had to purchase vinette(road tax). The
vinette cost about 8 euro. It has to be fixed on the top left of the
windscreen failing which the driver will be heavily fined. Vinette are
available at petro/gas station on the highway/motorway before reaching
the Austrian border. Vinette are for the use of highway.Secondary road does not require use of vinette.
We drove to the mountain pass
road 105 which connects to the other side road167. Need to take the
mountain train which also take the car and the passenger thro the tunnel
from the town of Mallnitz to the other side of the mountain town Bockstein. From here we drove to Salzburg. The bed n breakfast
in Salzburg was hosted by a charming lady Renee. She let us use the
kitchen to prepare dinner even though use of kitchen was not part of the rent facilities. Earlier we were planning to visit Salzburg town but since it was raining, we had to forget the idea. The room provided were huge. Toilet were found along the corridor. Renee house is huge and she lives alone. Occasionally, her children will visit her over the weekends. She lives downstairs. All rooms upstairs were rented. The next morning we prepared breakfast and cooked lunch. We invited Renee daughter in law Anja and her friend Pebetraba for brunch. Renee left home early to attend a funeral.
It was also raining the next day. Upon reaching Chech border, we need to purchase another set of vinette costing 12 euro for use on Chech highway. It had to be pasted on right hand side of the windscreen. Right after the Chech border, we stop over at Cesky Kumlov. There were not many visitors around since it was already quite late. Shops were closing and we were also hurrying to get to Prague.

Reached Prague 9pm. The host Tadeo had prepared the room and bed for us. He was staying with his wife and two kids. The room was downstairs close to the parking lot. Wash room is outside our room. Warm up the food that we had prepared in Salzburg and off to bed. The next day Tadeo helped us to get the bus/tram ticket to Prague city cente. He described which bus and train to take and what to see in the city in great details. We left the car at his home and took the train to the city center. Before leaving for the city, we hung the clothes washed the night before. Tadeo even helped to watch the clothes in case it rained since the weather was not too good.
The wife bought a crystal table lamp and souvenirs. I enquired with the salesman for a muslim butchery and found one called Galaxy Food along Opletalova Road in the city center.Purchased whole chicken and lamb chop for our dinner. That evening, wife prepared mutton soup and chicken curry. We spend two nights at Tadeo house.
Our next trip was Vienna. Along the way, we made a stop at Chech famous factory manufacturing glass and crystal. The factory tour starts at 11am and we were brought to see the glass/crystal making facilities. Tadeo helped to make arrangement for the factory visit. The finished product sold at the factory were much cheaper compared to the city center.
On the way to Vienna, we stop over at Karlstejn Castle. The castle however closes on Monday. The route to Viena are not fully highway since most of the stretch were still under construction. Right at the border before crossing to Austria we took a break for Freeport,a factory outlet. Adjacent to it were huge leisure park called Excalibur City.

Reached Vienna bnb at 8pm. The house was hosted by Ashley who works with the United Nation office. She lives with her boyfriend. It was a huge room beside the kitchen. Took our dinner from food prepared at the previous bnb and off to bed.
Ashley normally commute to office using the train which stops 15 min walk from her house. However, we preferred to park closer to the city to save on the train fare. To avoid city traffic, we park our car at line U6 Siebenhirten Apcoa Park n Ride which cost 3.5 euro for a whole day parking. Bought a whole day ticket for the three of us. The train took us direct to the city center. Took lunch at a halal (kosher) kebab stall just outside Siebenhirten train station. We spent two nights at Ashley house.

The next morning after having breakfast, we were off packing again for north Italy. It would be a 7 hours non stop drive. From Vienna, we took highway A1 and E60 west towards Salzburg. We crosses the German border into Inssbruck back on Austria E45 to Bolzano Italy. Right after passing German border, we were stopped by a german border police on a motorbike. It was just a routine border check. After producing the car registration and our passport, off we go.Took a short break at Chiemsee rest area on the E52 with huge lake.
On the A13 while crossing the Alps we break at Schonberg im Stubaital rest area. We had coffee, fries and fish fillet at Mc D outlet. The RnR is right on the mountain surrounded by views of the Alps.
The scenary as we crosses the Apls were very beautiful with snow-capped mountain in the distance. The highway passes through ravines and waterways.

The
bnb was located in the Dolomite area of north Italy called Vigo di Fassa. It has excellent trekking route for trekking enthusiast. Dolomite are a mountain range located in northeastern Italy. They form part of the Southern Limestone Alps.
We reached the bnb almost 11pm. The road ss 241 that we were supposed to drive from Bolzano towards Vigo di Fassa was closed for maintenance. We took a detour on ss 12 onto Prato al Isarco to via Nigra to Viga di Fasso. The detour route is a little bit more winding and narrower but the scene were fantastic passing right at the foot of the dolomites.
We do not spend much time here since we need to proceed to our next stop/bnb near Bergamo.

Bnb in Bergamo is located in a farm area. The owner owned farms close to their bnb. The bnb has five rooms. Our breakfast the next day comes from their farm produce. We did not meet the owner since has in his farms. We were entertained by his sister Daisy. Daisy was very talkative and spoke good english.
Breakfast was served by Daisy. There were home made cheese, apple pie and bread. Apple juice was fresh from the their orchard. Daisy was able to spend more time with us since we were the only guest for the day.

After breakfast we left for Milan which is about an hour drive. We set for a PnR on a Red Metro at Milangelo Station. Got a two way ticket costing 1.5euro per ticket/way for sight seeing tour of the city. The wife had bought most of her leather accessories from Florence, so Milan tour is solely for window shopping. The weather was extremely hot for us to expose too long under the sun. Most of the walking was under the shade and in shopping malls.

Pisa |
After lunch we shoot off to Pisa. By the time we reached Pisa, it was almost 9pm and was already dark. Took some photos and bought souvenirs from the stalls managed by Bangladeshi. We got a good bargain since we are able to speak some of their words which we had picked up during our one and half years stay in Dhaka Bangladesh. I was working with a local mobile company during the period.
By the time we reached our bnb in Piombina, it was already past midnight. We apologize profusely with the host for keeping her awake. We had planned to get to Piombino early since it is a beautiful historical town by the sea. But we spent too much time in Milan. During the rush to get to the bnb, the navsat/gps took us through the town center which are no-car zone area for non resident.
We prepared our own breakfast since breakfast were not served. The room to the place where we parked our car were about 200 meters. It was quite tiring pushing/pulling the luggage since the room is on a hill slope. After settling with the luggage, we toured the town. Took lots of photos along the beautiful breathtaking waterfront.

Soon after it was time to move on to the next bnb in Scafati, south Naples.
The plan was to drive along Amalfi coast. The weather was good. The Amalfi stretches along route SS163 for 37km. We started off from San Pietro driving east towards A3 at Vietri Sul Mare since it very convenient to make a stop at any time for photos due to the driving on the right side of the road. The road was very narrow at many stretches along the hill terrain. One is able to see houses perching on the hill slopes and houses right down on the rocks and waterline below. By the time we reached motorway A3, it was already 10pm. We reached the bnb at 10.45

The host Paola was away in Greece. Her mother greeted us. The room was upstairs. She showed us at the facilities and the kitchen. The kitchen was in another block of the house. She needed to leave early the next morning and she was explaining to us how to lock ourselves out during check-out.
We had the house to ourselves the next day. She was kind enough to let us leave/checkout anytime. We had breakfast in the garden. There was a small orchard within the house compound. There were lemon tree, grapes, apples and many other fruit trees that were not full bloom yet.

By lunch we were on our way to Rome, the final destination in Italy. Our host Ricardo request us to get to his house before 8 since he had a football match he had to watch. Before that we stop over at Rome Outlet 30 min from his house. We were at his house by 7. His mother greeted us and he showed us our room and all the facilities.
We retire early to bed since there will be lots of walking the next day. The weather was very hot almost 28 degrees. Our first visit was the Colesseum. The ticket queue close to main entrance was very long. Ricardo had advised us to get to another ticket counter on right side, right after the Arc of Constantine. True enough there was shorter queue.

We spend 3 nights in Ricardo house. Our flight back to Bristol had been detoured to Campiano airport so we have to leave early even though the flight was at 4pm. I had to send the family to Campiano and returned the rented car to Fumicino airport. Then I had to catch a bus back to Campiano via the Termini since there was no direct shuttle bus between the two airport. I lost some time in trying to locate the rental office. There were several rental car agency parked in different blocks at Fumiciano Airport. I had accidentally parked at the wrong block where Europe Car were and unnecessarily had to pay parking charges of 5 euro to leave the building.
Took the shuttle bus service Terravision from Fumiciano to Termini Station. Ticket was 5 euro. From Termini has to get another Terravision shuttle to Campiano airport, ticket costing 6 euro.
We reached Bristol Airport 7pm. Took A1 Shuttle bus from the airport. It was very convenient as the bus stops 100 m from Ajim house in West Road Bristol. Reached home 8pm. We only a have a day rest/break since the next day we will be taking another flight to Dublin Ireland.
The flight was at 4pm. We travel light since we did not purchase checked in luggage and moreover it was only a five night trip. We took the Aer Lingus airline, a 50 minutes flight to Dublin. It was a twin engine 80 seater propeller plane.
Upon landing, we got straight to Europe car for our car rental. Our first stop was Toomebridge, Belfast north Ireland 3 hours drive from Dublin. The first thing we did was getting to the grocery for our food supply. As usual we bought rice, potatoes, fish fillet, cooking oil, salt, sugar, tomatoes, fruits, mineral water etc...
Bnb Toomebridge North Ireland
Reached bnb 10 pm. It was already late. Tommy, our host was still waiting for our arrival. Tommy lives with his wife. They operate a nursery. Tommy was very kind to upgrade our room to accommodate 3 bed at no extra cost. Earlier we had booked for a 2 bedded room. The room was a renovated cabin with kitchen, bath, living and bedroom. Tommy had left plenty of food in the freezer and on the table for our breakfast. The wife prepared a quick dinner, rice with fried fish.
For breakfast we had cereal, strawberry, bananas, bread and coffee all provided by Tommy. We packed up, took photos of the couple and drove to Dark Hedges, Bregagh Road, one of the location where Games of Throne was filmed. These are rows of beech trees planted 200 years ago. Later to Rope Bridge and Giants Causeway.

We make sure to get to the next stop early. Arrived at Pau'ls bnb Castlebar at 6 pm. Paul just came back from work. He lives alone. We had booked for a 2 bed room. It was a 2 storey house. Paul use the room on the ground floor while 2 other rooms upstairs were rented out. Paul was kind enough to let Ajim to use the other vacant room at no additional cost.
Paul had the breakfast ready on the table the next day. He had to leave for work and let us the house to ourselves. We left at 11 for the National Museum of Country Life ten minutes from the bnb. The museum houses the life of the Irish from the early day until present.
Later off south to Cliff of Moher. The secondary route takes us through the countryside of immense beauty via N59 to Sky Road.
We reached Cliff of Moher very late in the evening. Even though the sun sets at 9 pm, facilities to the attraction were already closed. The car park was still open but unmanned. Good we arrived late since we do not have to pay the entry charges of euro 9 per person.

Reached Ruth home almost 10.30pm. She looks tired waiting for us. Next morning she prepared breakfast for everyone. As she had to leave home early, we have to comply since she was not able to leave the house unattended.
Anyway we also need to leave early to cover more ground for our next tour of Ring of Kerry.

Reached Tippery bnb quite early since we had cut short the tour of Ring of Kerry. We lost our way and had to call Roisin. Finally got the right direction and was received by Shane and their 3 children, twins Aisgling & Muirean and their elder brother Darragh. Aisling showed us around the house. Our son Ajim played with them while we chat with their parents. The kids also presented us with Irish folk dance while Darragh played the flute. What a beautiful evening we had with the charming family.

We use highway M9 to get to Dublin. We somehow accidentally exited to Kildare Outlet while looking for a rest area to ease ourselves. Further down M9, detour slightly off to Glendalough and Wicklow Mountain. From there we drove straight to Ian home in Dublin.
Stayed in Dublin for one night. The flight to Bristol was at 5 pm. Before checking out, we toured the city tourist attraction. Walked to Dublin Castle, Temple Bar and across River Liffey to Mary St, Henry St and Moore St.

back to Bristol
We rented a car at Bristol Airport for our five days. Had five days to stay in Ajims flat at Bedminster Bristol before leaving for Malaysia.
Went to Stoke on Trent the following day. Stop by Churchill Factory Shop, Marlborough Way, Tunstall ST6 5NZ. There were on sale for old stock items. Did not buy anything here since my wife had been an avid collector of Portmeirion wares. We had been using them since our stay in the UK during the 80's. Got sets for new arrivals and also replacing those cracked and broken pieces back home. The factory shop that we were used to visit are the one at London Road ST4 7QQ. There are also other outlet but their collection were smaller quantities. The prices also varies from outlet to outlet. Also spent some time at another portmeirion outlet at Trentham Shopping Village. It was a small shop but we stop by since it was on the way to another outlet in Cheshire Oak Factory Outlet Liverpool. Some items are much cheaper here by 30 percent. Left the outlet about closing time and reach Bristol 1130pm.
The next day after lunch, we went to Swindon Factory Outlet about 50 minutes away. Swindon Outlet was an old railway building converted into a shopping complex. It houses many branded clothes n apparels, bags and lots more.
